About Us
Making a difference one shower at a time
Sunnyside Shower Project was established in January of 2021 based on conversations between housed and unhoused neighbors in which many houseless people living in Sunnyside (a neighborhood in Southeast Portland, Oregon) identified the need for a safe and reliable place to shower and maintain their hygiene. Over time, the Shower Project has expanded to offer toiletry items, laundry cards, clean clothes, food, COVID vaccines, and other support.
The Shower Project initially offered showers on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at the Sunnyside Methodist Church. As interest increased and the pool of volunteers grew Saturday afternoons became shower days as well. Each afternoon offers six 30-minute shower opportunities—a mix of scheduled appointments and drop-in guests.
Volunteers greet guests as they arrive, clean the bathroom after each use, organize and solicit donations, de-escalate situations when necessary, and connect houseless neighbors to other services when possible.
